Most of you are already aware that the reason the Call of Duty series is able to release a new game every year is because there are two studios working on the games. The development cycle for a Call of Duty game is 2-years, which means that every other year, a different studio is releasing their version of the game. This is why there is such a difference between games from year to year. The very first Call of Duty game was released by Infinity Ward back in 2003. Infinity Ward was started by the same guys that worked on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. In fact, the original 22-member team that came over to Infinity Ward were all members of that team at Medal of Honor. Infinity Ward was responsible for Call of Duty, Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and the latest, Call of Duty Ghosts.
The other studio involved in the development of Call of Duty is Treyarch. Treyarch has been involved with the series since Call of Duty 3, which was an abysmal entry in the series. They followed that up with World at War, which was fun, then Black Ops and Black Ops 2, which are 2 of the best entries in the series. I was a huge proponent of the Infinity Ward Call of Duty titles until Black Ops 2, now I am officially a Treyarch fan. But that being said, now we have a 3rd studio coming in to the mix.
Sledgehammer Games, who helped out with development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, will now be taking the reigns on an entry into the series. I’m not sure what aspect of Modern Warfare 3 they were in charge of, but I don’t see this being a bad thing. I think it’ll be good to get another studio involved to keep things fresh and new. Plus, this gives each studio a 3-year development cycle to polish the game and make sure that everything is perfect.
So we’ll see what happens from here on out. Nothing has been announced as far as the new Call of Duty game being released this fall, but there’s a chance we could see our first Sledgehammer Games installment since the last game they worked on was Modern Warfare 3, which would have been 3 years ago, so it makes sense.
What do you think of the choice to move to 3 studios? Which studio has created your favorite Call of Duty games so far?
